Bias behind all the Books

In the last class, there ware three points to focus on. These are called 3Bs: Background, Biography and Bias. Concentrating on each theme, I was able to find new phases of  OMS like a prism. Especially, bias attracts me most. Whether it is positive or negative, it could influence the content. For example, because Hemingway (Santiago) thought of the black people as a strong species and might have respected them, he used the word, "nigger" in the book. It's interesting.
Concerning backgrounds, it is set in the middle of the Cold War,so the world were faced with the danger of breaking out war. Boosting economy happened, but actually people are always threatened by the fear. Now that we couldn't feel the same as my own experience, we have to search authors and history for such information.

I'd like to be a more fluent blogger!

  1. Great blog with one exception, Hemingway DIDN'T use the word "nigger" as many of his many of contemporaries did because H was sensitive to its negative connotations. Rather, he used the word "negro" and any racial reference was somewhat muted. He saw the "Negro of Cienfuegos" as a worthy opponent of equal strength though he was proud to eventually beat him in the arm wrestle. The only talk of inferiority was of humanity compared to creatures of nature - he saw them as "nobler brothers".

  2. Sorry, I made a serious mistake. I'm surprised H viewed them as nobler brothers. His idea was rare at that time, wasn't it?

  3. Although, H's writing was somewhat macho, he was, after all an anti-fascist and he did support the plight of the common "man".
